Bodacious Blue Annuals

Evolvulus Blue My MindI thought I’d carry the winter blue theme over to some blue flowering annuals from Proven Winners that add brilliant bling to containers and landscapes.

Blue My Mind Evolvulus

And the first plant to enter the spotlight is Evolvulus ‘Blue My Mind’. Yowser! This stunning annual thrives in full sun and lots of heat. The soft, blue-green leaves make a lovely complement to the flowers. It has more of a ‘spiller’ habit, reaching 6”-12” tall and trailing to 24”.

Blue Angelonia

Angelonia Angelface BlueThere are several blue Angelonias (okay, there may be a touch of lavender or purple in the flower) that have stopped traffic in my gardens. Angelface ‘Dresden Blue’ and ‘Angelface ‘Blue’ are easy to grow, are incredibly heat tolerant, love sunny spots and are deer resistant. All colors provide strong vertical accents to a garden or container.

Blue Lobelia

Lobelia Laguna Sky BlueAnd of course Lobelia is in the blue-tiful group. Lucia ‘Dark Blue’, Laguna ‘Compact Blue with Eye’ and Laguna ‘Sky Blue’ all have billowing mounds of blue, self-cleaning flowers that are much more heat tolerant than other lobelias that melt out in the summer heat.

Blue Torenia

Torenia Midnight BlueSome other blue heart throbs of mine are Torenia ‘Midnight Blue’ and Torenia ‘Large Blue’. These shade lovers have striking tubular flowers that ring the dinner bell for hummingbirds and pollinators, but are detested by deer. Each has a graceful cascading habit (‘Midnight Blue’ more than ‘large Blue’) that make them ideal of hanging baskets, containers and window boxes. Any of the blue flowering annuals above will brighten your skies and lift your spirits!
