Willowleaf Sunflower

Helianthus salicifolius This is definitely a Dr. Seus plant – very amusing looking. Helianthis salicifolius, commonly called willowleaf sunflower, is a native species of sunflower. It hails from the midwest, primarily from the Great Plains and Ozark Plateau. I first saw this unusual plant in the Bressingham Garden at the Gardens of Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA. It is a very tall, narrow growing perennial with soft green, willow-like leaves that sweep downward.

Cheerful yellow flowers appear in the fall. It grows to 5’ – 6’ tall and prefers full sun. Birds and butterflies adore the flowers. Willowleaf sunflower is hardy in Zones 4 – 9. (photo Missouri Botanical Garden)
