Pot ’em Up!

The green checkered flag is waving and potting soil is flying as gardeners race to their potting benches! The spring craze is here for starting seeds and cuttings as well as planting colorful containers. Many of you have heard me raving about my awesome self-watering containers that can go for WEEKS without watering. My two current favorites are Crescent Garden TruDrop planters and Viva containers – both are sold by Gardener’s Supply (save 20% on ONLINE orders by using the special Perennially Yours discount code PYOURS18). And as with most self-watering systems, especially these two high-tech ones, soilless potting medium is recommended. I like to use Espoma Organic Potting Soil Mix, ideal for all potted plants – both indoors and outdoors. It includes a rich blend of sphagnum peat moss, peat humus and perlite that has been enriched with Myco-tone® and fortified with worm castings.

Here is a picture of a Crescent Garden TruDrop container I planted last spring using Espoma’s potting soil. The pot is filled with mostly perennials plus two Supertunia ‘Royal Velvet’ annuals. I had this planter on my back deck where it received part sun at best. The container went a full SIX WEEKS without my refilling the reservoir! I now have a whole new outlook on container gardening!
