Plant Feature: Wood’s Phlox

Wood’s Phlox
(Phlox divaricata)

Sun – Shade. Move aside Moss Phlox. Wood’s Phlox is a workhorse that provides vibrant spring flowers as does Moss Phlox (also called creeping phlox) but that is where the similarity stops.

Wood’s Phlox outflanks Moss Phlox with its lo nger boom time (a good five to six weeks), incredible fragrant blooms, deer resistance, and knack for smothering weeds. To trigger this natural weed control, simply shear blooms off after they’re spent and this stimulates a thicker mat of leaves.

Plants are usually between 6” and 14” tall when in bloom; 1” to 2” once sheared. Flowers can be white, pink, shades of blue, or lavender. To increase your inventory, just divide clumps after blooming, reset, water in and smile. Wood’s Phlox are hardy from Zones 3 – 8.
