EcoLogic Moisture-In

This is a great month to give selected evergreens a ‘winter jacket’ to help protect them from Old Man Winter’s havoc.  Climbing roses and bigleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) can also benefit from additionalalt insulation.  Applying an anti-transpirante, also known as an anti-dessicant, reduces damage from drying winds, winter sun scorch and moisture depletion due to frozen ground.  Simply spray the protective sealant on foliage, making sure to reach both upper are lower surfaces.  Do this in late November or December when daytime temperatures are above 40 degrees.  Wilt-Pruf has long been recognized as a premier product, but it has some tough competition now.  ‘Moisture-In’ was released by Liquid Fence, a leader in the industry for its deer proofing products.  EcoLogic ‘Moisture-In’ was selected as the most effective anti-transpirante, compared to 18 other similar products, by the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science.  Both Moisture-In and Wilt-Pruf are organic and biodegradable.  We carry both products at Faddegon’s Nursery in Latham, NY.  At our garden center, a 32 ounce container of Moisture-In is $8.99, compared to a similar size container of Wilt-Pruf that sells for $12.99. Shrubs that benefit from a misting include Rhododendrons, Azalea, evergreen Holly, and Boxwood. (photos courtesy of Liquid Fence, www.liquidfence.com)
