Dwarf Citrus Trees

Dwarf Citrus Trees. Can you imagine how delightful it would be to harvest your own, home-grown citrus to enjoy at the table? Well, stop imaging! Dwarf citrus trees grown as indoor plants are becoming the rage. The keys for successfully growing an ‘indoor grove’ are lots of bright light and some humidity. They also need regular watering and periodic fertilizing.

As far as light, 8 hours or more of daily sunshine near a south or southwest facing window is best. If you get less light than this, consider supplementing it with full spectrum bulbs or fluorescent plant lights. If the air in your home tends to be ‘dry’ in winter, you can rectify this with a humidifier or by simply misting citrus leaves with a spray bottle.

There are certain varieties of citrus that handle indoor conditions (especially winter months in the Northeast) better than others. Meyer Lime is probably one of the most popular and easiest to grow. The fruit is actually a cross between lemon and a Manderin orange, resulting in naturally sweet lemon. Other good indoor tree options include Kaffir lime, Trovita orange and Oro Blanco grapefruit.
