Calycanthus Aphrodite

Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ This is a revved-up version of an old favorite. Calycanthus is commonly known as Sweetshrub and Carolina Allspice due to its fruity fragrance, which many describe as a funky mixture of pineapple, strawberry and banana. ‘Aphrodite’ has large red, magnolia-like flowers that open in spring and repeat again later in the season. This deciduous shrub grows between 5’ to 6’ in sun to part shade. You can prune it hard after the first flowering to maintain a more compact plant. The large, dark leaves that change to a lovely golden-yellow in fall, are pleasantly fragrant when crushed. It can tolerate clay soil and is ignored by deer. Hardy in Zones 5 – 9.
