Holly-tone for acid loving shrubs is a great nightcap before winter

Fall is an ideal time to give acid-loving shrubs a dollop of Holly-tone (4-3-4). The gentle, slow-release, organic fertilizer not only provides plants with a light snack before winter bedtime, it also helps to lower soil pH (it contains elemental sulfur), making many nutrients more accessible to roots. The recommended application of Holly-tone is twice a year; once in spring and then in fall BUT the fall feed should be at half strength before the onset of cold winter months. Follow the package directions for application amounts. Acid-loving shrubs include rhododendron, azalea, mountain laurel, holly, dogwood, mahonia, heath and heather.
