Epimedium

Epimedium Epimedium, commonly called Barrenwort, is the answer for gardeners scratching their heads for a lovely perennial that grows in dry  shade. The common name came from the belief that the roots caused barrenness in women. Another rumor is that the plant’s extract is an aphrodisiac. My, my. Barrenwort has delicate, wing-like flowers that can be white, yellow, pink, rose, crimson, violet and multi-colored. The spring blooms are carried on dark wiry stems emerging from attractive heart or arrow-shaped leaves. The leaves are as much of a focal point as the flowers. In cooler weather (spring and fall) the foliage develops stunning burgundy markings. I have grown many varieties of Barrenwort, all with wonderful success. The legendary English garden designer, Beth Chatto, called Epimedium one her must-have 100 perennials. I agree! Barrenwort enjoys part shade to shade and is hardy to Zone 3 (varies by cultivar).
