Pieris

Andromeda (Pieris japonica) This is a lovely spring flowering shrub for part sun or shade.   In the past there were only green-leaved varieties with white flowers. Now there are stunning variegated cultivars as well as those with rich pink flowers.  Pieris range in height from 4’ – 12’. They have shiny evergreen leaves and are commonly used as foundation plantings.  Site them in a spot out of the path of winter winds. Some cultivars, like ‘Mountain Fire’ sports brilliant red new foliage after flowering. If pruning is required, do so after flowering.  Some popular varieties include ‘Valley Rose’ (two toned pink and white flowers), ‘Katsura’ (rose-pink flowers), ‘Flaming Silver’ (variegated green and white leaves, white flowers) and ‘Mountain Fire’ (white flowers). Zones 4 – 9
