Grand Garden Class at The Grand Hotel

grand-hotel-photoI am excited to be giving an exclusive how-to gardening class as the ‘opening act’ for the Proven Winners Grand Garden Show on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan.  I will be teaching ‘Designing a High-Impact, Low-Maintenance Flower Garden Featuring Remarkable Perennials, Flowering Shrubs and Annuals’ on Sunday, August 28 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at The Grand Hotel, the host site for the Grand Garden Show.
yellow_house_garden-mackinacThis class covers easy to implement steps for creating stunning, four season flower gardens. Topics include site assessment; plant selection for continuous color spring through fall; design principles and techniques for beautiful, sustainable beds; arranging plants based on mature heights; creating focal points; plus drafting a design to scale and building a plant list. The second half of the class focuses on superior, time-tested perennials, flowering shrubs and annuals as well as their care.  The class registration fee is $55 per person and includes extensive handouts and gardening catalogs.  Registration is through Perennially Yours. Just scroll down to August 28 and pay by credit card via PayPal or print the general class registration form and send in a check.
colorful_small_garden-mackinacI am also one of the speakers at the amazing Grand Garden Show on August 29-30.  I’m presenting on new and cool annuals.  For the complete program schedule, speakers, topics and registration details click here.
Please be aware that you do not have to stay at the fabulous Grand Hotel to participate in the Grand Garden Show.  There are Day Only Tickets available.  You can stay off island and simply take the ferry if this better fits your budget. There are numerous properties in St. Ignace (less than 3 miles from the island) that are under $100, including a Best Western.  Also, for those of you in the New England area, flights are available from Boston (Logan airport) to Sault Ste. Marie (the airport that I fly into) for around $350 round trip. You can take a cab /shuttle/rental car from there.
