A Gorgeous Noninvasive Buckthorn

Rhamnus frangula ‘Fine Line’ I love this noninvasive Buckthorn. I’ve designed with it in the landscape as well as containers. I took this picture while speaking at New England Grows (Boston) the other day. I had forgotten how stunning the needle-like foliage looks in fall! The semi-evergreen green leaves turn a blazing golden-yellow as temperatures drop. ‘Fine Line’ does best in full to part sun and can grow to 5’ – 7 in zones 2 – 7. It has multiple functions. You can use it to create a strong vertical accent in the landscape, or serve as a privacy hedge, or tuck into tight spaces that cry out for a foundation planting. This deer resistant, drought tolerant workhorse is a winner!
