Garden Design magazine features Piet Oudolf’s gardens NYBG
Piet Oudolf is a name recognized by gardeners world-wide. This renowned Dutch garden designer has transformed the way many of us think about flower gardening. The autumn 2015 issue of Garden Design magazine featured one of Oudolf’s masterpiece – the stunning 200-foot-long seasonal border at New York Botanical Garden.
Oudolf originally designed this garden in 2008 but returned in 2014 to redesign these beds so they reflected “New Wave Planting”, a blend of ecology and pollinator action that also embraces the four-season beauty of plants. The beds feature around 8,000 bulbs and perennials, with autumn being the most sensational of seasons as grasses play a grandiose role.
Oudolf notes that many small space gardeners are hesitant about using big plants. He encourages gardeners to be bold and think big. Rather than having lots of little plants that you look down at, build in some larger specimens that provide ‘wrap-around submersion’.
The feature spotlights many of the perennials that star in this bed, including Amsonia hubrichtii, Patrinia scabiosifolia (pictured below), Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Henry Eilers’ (pictured above), Actea s. ‘James Compton’, Veronicastrum, Persicaria and Salvia azurea ‘Nekan’ (pictured right).
