Riveting Annuals from Proven Winners

superbells_evening_star_PWSuperbells ‘Evening Star’ Riveting! That’s the reaction you will have as you stare at Proven Winner’s new hybrid Calibrachoa ‘Evening Star’. This continuous blooming annual (commonly called million bells) pumps out lovely lavender flowers featuring a yellow star pattern and deep purple throat. ‘Evening Star’ will get 6” – 12” tall with flower-laden stems that can trail up to two feet. Like all Calibrachoa they demand well-drained soil (wet soil is the death of them) and full sun to part sun.

This family of annuals has long been one of my favorite choices for shade. I first started using it years ago when I got tired of water-demanding common Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana). This switcheroo was made even before Impatiens started having problems with downy mildew. Browallia flowers only comes in two color choices – blue-purple or white. ‘Endless Illumination’ sports brilliant violet purple blooms that dance above emerald green foliage all season long without deadheading. Browallia loves the heat and does not require much fertilization to thrive. Although the tag says that part shade to shade is best, I’ve found that it thrives in full sun as well in Zones 6 or cooler. ‘Endless Illumination’ can grow to 12” – 16” tall, but will stay more compact if pinched when planted. This annual is just another of Proven Winners superstars!
