Garden Design Magazine is Digging Dahlias!

Garden Design Magazine - sponsor of Perennially YoursI have always put my muck boot down on using dahlias in the gardens, believing the work involved in digging and storing them for winter outweighed the beauty they offered. That was until I read the Digging Dahlias article in the autumn issue of Garden Design magazine. These exceptional plants contribute tremendous color and form to the late summer garden. The 8-page feature spotlights the history behind these exotic-looking flowers and explains the various flower forms available. Stunning images of seven of the ten different forms are pictured.

Historically Dahlias were primarily grown as cutting flowers but this has changed greatly in recent years. Now they are strong accents in mixed perennial borders, looking particularly ravishing when partnered with ornamental grasses. Their popularity was further peaked with in introduction of ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, the first bronze-leaved Dahlia to hit the market. Now both flowers and foliage are head turners! The article also provides some design tips for incorporating Dahlias into the landscape. (photo at right courtesy of Marianne Majerus. Photo below courtesy of Andrea Jones)
